The Etiologic Diseases of Pleural Effusion in Children

Abstract
It is necessary to know the etiologic disease for the treatment of pleural effusion, because pleural effusion is secondary phenomenon of various diseases as well as respiratory diseases. We started this study to investigate the change of the
etiologic
disease of pleural effusion according to the developmental period and apply the results to diagnosis and treatment of pleural effusion.
The subjects of investigation were 112 patients in admission to the general hospital of medical college of Yonsei University from January, 1989, to December, 1994, because of pleural effusion. We estimated the etiologic disease by clinical
findings,
radiologic findings serologic laboratory diseases of pleural effusion according to the developmental period.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The patient with pleural effusion were 13 cases in infancy period(11.6%), 45 cases in preschool period(40.2%), 35 cases in school period(31.2%), 19 cases in puberty period(17.0%), 61 cases were male, and 51 cases were female.
2) In the etiologic diseases of pleural effusion, pleural effusion developed due to mycoplasmal pneumonia in 44 cases(39.3%),pneumonias other than mycoplasmal pneumonia in 31 cases 927.7%), pulmonary tuberculosis in 19 cases(17.0%),and tumors in
8
cases(7.1%).
3) The pleural effusion was located in right lung in 47 cases(41.9%), left lung in 44 cases (39.3%), and both lungs in 21 cases(18.8%).
4) In cases with pleural effusion due to mycoplasmal pneumonia, the titers of antimycoplasmal antibody were 1:80 in 14 cases(31.8%), 1:160 to 1:320 in 8 cases(18.2%), 1:640 to 1:1,280 in 19 cases(43.2%), above 1:2,560 in 3 cases(6.8%).
5) The most common etiologic disease was pneumonia other than mycoplasmal pneumonia in infancy (38.5%), mycoplasmal pneumonia in preschool(42.2%) and school period(51.4%). But it was pulmonary tuberculosis in puberty period(42.1%).
